Brazil generated 1.48 million formal jobs in 2023


In 2023, Brazil reported a net increase of 1,483,598 formal jobs. Throughout the year (January to December), there were 23,257,812 new admissions and 21,774,214 dismissals. These figures were released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, which oversees the new General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged), mandating monthly reporting of new admissions and dismissals by companies.

The services sector experienced the most significant growth in formal employment in 2023, adding 886,256 jobs. In commerce, 276,528 jobs were created; in construction, 158,940; in industry, 127,145; and in agriculture, 34,762.

Positive job growth was observed in all 27 Brazilian states, with notable increases in São Paulo (390,719 jobs, +3%), Rio de Janeiro (160,570 jobs, +4.7%), and Minas Gerais (140,836 jobs, +3.2%).

Most jobs created in 2023 were taken by men (840,740), while women secured 642,892 new positions. The age group with the highest job growth was 18 to 24 years old, accounting for 1,158,532 jobs.
